A deputy-involved shooting occurred in the early hours of Saturday that led to a man’s death.
According to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called after receiving a tip about a suspicious person at the 6700 Block of Southwest 4th Place.
When deputies arrived, Darian D. Holmes, 56, was armed with a handgun and causing a commotion.
Deputies began to bargain with Holmes for approximately 40 minutes in an attempt to de-escalate the situation.
During the encounter, deputies say Holmes pointed a gun at deputies, causing them to open fire. Holmes was struck and transported to a local hospital, where he later died.
Holmes had 14 prior felony charges, including two convictions of a felon in possession of a firearm.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is currently investigating the case.
The deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, according to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.
