In Loving Memory of Dennis Eugene Schmitt

The Woodland community is mourning the tragic and heartbreaking loss of Dennis Eugene Schmitt, a 71-year-old man whose life ended under devastating circumstances in December 2025. Dennis’s passing has left a profound sense of sorrow among those who knew him, and his death serves as a painful reminder of how fragile life can be.

On the evening of December 16, 2025, Cowlitz 911 received a report of suspicious circumstances in the 3600 block of Old Lewis River Road in Woodland. What began as a troubling phone call quickly unfolded into a solemn and deeply distressing investigation. Deputies with the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office responded to the property and, following the execution of a search warrant, discovered Dennis’s body concealed on the premises. Authorities later confirmed that Dennis had suffered multiple blunt-force injuries to the head, as well as evidence of strangulation, according to a forensic autopsy conducted on December 19.

Dennis was more than the tragic circumstances surrounding his death. He was a human being with a life story, experiences, and relationships that mattered. To those who knew him, he was a presence, a neighbor, a friend, and a member of the wider community whose life had meaning and value. His loss is deeply felt, and the pain carried by those who loved him is immeasurable.

A suspect, identified as 67-year-old Ricky Dean Miller, has been arrested and charged with Second-Degree Murder and Unlawful Disposal of Human Remains. As the legal process continues, investigators are asking anyone with information related to this case to contact Detective James Hanberry at 360-577-3092.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Dennis Eugene Schmitt. May his memory be honored with dignity, and may those grieving find strength, comfort, and peace during this incredibly difficult time.
