Around 6:30 p.m., deputies with the Lea County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a violent two-vehicle collision near South Ponderosa Lane. When they arrived, they found a scene marked by the force of the impact—a black 2004 Ford F-250 positioned sideways across both lanes of the highway, heavily damaged from a head-on collision. Nearby, in a ditch on the north side of the road, sat a black 2015 GMC Yukon, also bearing severe front-end damage. Behind the wreckage and flashing lights was the heartbreaking reality: Domingo Chavarria, the driver of the GMC, had suffered fatal injuries and passed away at the scene.
