The events that unfolded on Ferrell Way in Elk Grove have left a community heartbroken and searching for answers. Early in the morning, just after 8 AM, law enforcement responded to a scene that no one should ever have to witness: the murder of an 11-year-old boy, whose life was taken far, far too soon. What should have been an ordinary morning became a devastating tragedy—one that will leave a lifelong mark on everyone touched by this loss.

The young victim, an innocent child with a future yet unfulfilled, was discovered by Elk Grove Police inside the family home. The suspect was identified as his own father, 40-year-old Marvin Morales, a former Sacramento County Deputy Sheriff who had been terminated from his position in February 2024. The pain and shock of such a betrayal—of a parent harming the child entrusted to their care—cannot be expressed in simple words. The community mourns not only the loss of a young life but the shattering of trust, safety, and innocence.

As details unfolded, Elk Grove Police broadcast Morales’ vehicle description to nearby agencies. What followed was a rapid, coordinated effort by multiple departments. Sheriff Jim Cooper himself spotted the suspect vehicle on Interstate 5, and soon, a large coalition of law enforcement—Sheriff’s deputies, officers from allied agencies, and investigators from separate jurisdictions—moved to intervene.

Morales did not surrender. A vehicle pursuit ensued, ending near Interstate 5 and Highway 12. There, confrontation gave way to an officer-involved shooting. Gunfire was exchanged, and Morales was struck by rounds fired by two Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputies and other responding officers. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. No law enforcement personnel were injured.

The California Highway Patrol, along with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division, is now leading the investigation into the shooting—as is standard in cases involving use of force. The two Deputies directly involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
