In Loving Memory of Richard L. Gairns
The community of Olympia is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Richard L. Gairns, a 67-year-old man whose life was tragically cut short in a single-vehicle collision on Interstate 5 near Grand Mound on the morning of Wednesday, December 3rd. His passing leaves family, friends, and all who knew him in deep sorrow, yet also united in remembering the kindness, steadiness, and quiet strength that defined his life.
According to the Washington State Patrol, Richard was traveling northbound in his 2016 Buick LaCrosse around milepost 87 at approximately 6:31 a.m. When his vehicle struck the concrete barrier on the right shoulder, it rolled over and ultimately came to rest on its top. The vehicle then caught fire. Despite wearing his seat belt, Richard tragically did not survive and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances of the accident, and it remains unknown whether any impairing factors were present.
Richard’s sudden passing is a shock that ripples deeply through those who loved him. At 67, he was a man still filled with purpose, routine, and the warmth of a life well-lived. Those close to him remember him as someone who carried himself with grace and humility—never seeking attention, but always offering compassion, wisdom, or a helping hand when needed. He was the type of person who made ordinary days feel lighter simply by being present.
In his community, Richard was known for his dependable nature. Whether he was chatting with neighbors, volunteering his time, or simply running errands around town, he greeted people with sincerity and a steady kindness that left a lasting impression. His family describes him as a deeply loving man—someone who believed that the greatest legacy a person could leave behind is the love they give and the good they do quietly, without expectation.
Richard’s life was one rooted in meaningful relationships. He cherished his family, took pride in their accomplishments, and offered support through every season of life. His friends speak of endless conversations, shared stories, inside jokes, and memories that now feel even more precious. He was a listener, a thinker, a gentle soul whose presence brought comfort and calm.
The manner of his passing is tragic, but it will not define him. Instead, his memory will be carried forward by those who loved him most—through the stories they tell, the traditions they keep alive, and the countless ways he influenced their lives for the better. His absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, yet his spirit remains a guiding light for all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As the community reflects on Richard’s life, they honor not just the man he was, but the love he shared, the steadiness he offered, and the legacy of kindness he leaves behind. May his memory be a blessing, a comfort, and a reminder to hold close the people who matter most.
Rest in peace, Richard L. Gairns.
You are deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
