In Loving Memory of John Remedis

FREETOWN, Mass. — The Freetown community is mourning the tragic loss of John Remedis, a decorated Vietnam War veteran and retired police detective, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon. The crash occurred around 3:45 p.m. near 170 South Main Street, close to Copart. Emergency crews from the Freetown Police Department, Fire Department, and EMS responded swiftly to a 911 call reporting the incident.

Upon arrival, first responders found two victims: Mr. Remedis and his wife. Both were transported to Charlton Memorial Hospital for evaluation and treatment, but due to the severity of his injuries, Mr. Remedis was pronounced deceased. His wife remains in stable condition. South Main Street was temporarily closed in both directions to allow emergency personnel to safely manage the scene, and it reopened later that evening.

John Remedis led a life of remarkable service and dedication. Beyond his military service during the Vietnam War, he spent decades as a police detective in Massachusetts and Florida, earning respect for his commitment to justice and his community. Friends and neighbors also remember him for his lighter side — as “Johnny Angel,” a beloved local DJ who brought joy and classic tunes to countless events. His generosity extended beyond his professional life, as he devoted significant time to veteran services and charitable causes, leaving a lasting impact on those around him.

“John was always a shoulder to lean on,” said a close friend. “He put others first and touched the lives of everyone he met. His presence will be sorely missed.”

Calling hours for Mr. Remedis will take place on Monday, December 15, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Rock Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 16, at 11:30 a.m., followed by burial at Assonet Burying Grounds, 40 South Main Street, Assonet.

The Freetown Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. The community extends its deepest condolences to the Remedis family during this time of profound loss.
